Mercedes Coghen: “Madrid is the City for an Olympic Fiesta”

Madrid is the ideal city to host the greatest sporting event on the planet.

2 October
Madrid will today find out whether the city has been elected to host
the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2016.  With just hours before the
final announcement of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Madrid
2016 bid leader Mercedes Coghen has said why Madrid is the ideal city
to host the greatest sporting event on the planet.

Madrid offers
the IOC an Olympic and Paralympic Games a fiesta atmosphere in a secure
setting. Madrid is a very safe city, with a low level of crime.

As the Madrid 2016 bid delegation prepares to give its final presentation to show the IOC members why the city deserves to host the 2016 Games, people in Madrid will fill the city’s streets in one final show of solidarity and to celebrate the announcement. Another example of the city’s warm fiesta spirit, Madrid’s citizens will watch the final announcement wearing colourful T-shirts with the Madrid 2016 logo. The scenes are likely to replicate Sunday’s ‘Impulse Day’, when half a million people gathered in the city’s Cibeles Square to wave off the Madrid 2016 delegation and reaffirm their support for the bid.

Speaking in Copenhagen about why Madrid is the perfect setting to welcome the Olympic Family in 2016, Mercedes Coghen said: “In Spain we have the fiesta spirit in our blood and we also have the Olympic spirit in our blood”

“On Sunday, half a million people gathered in the centre of Madrid for a street fiesta to celebrate and show support for our Olympic bid. Not only does this show the phenomenal support in our city for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2016 and the warm welcome everyone will receive, it is one of numerous examples of the safe environment of our city.

“Madrid offers the balance of a fiesta spirit on safe streets, where everyone can be assured of enjoying the Olympics freely and we look forward to welcoming everyone here and for the greatest Olympics ever in 2016”.
