Madrid 2016 Volunteers in Copenhagen
Final decision tomorrow and local volunteers give their best for the bid.
Copenhagen, 1 October - The final decision from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as to which city will host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games draws near. The Madrid 2016 bid has the support of its dedicated volunteers with the delegation, even in Copenhagen.
There are 38 Spanish volunteers in the Danish capital busy carrying out important work to support the Madrid 2016 bid, by helping and guiding those people in Copenhagen representing Madrid’s bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2016.
The volunteers, who have come together to give their time in support of the Madrid bid either live or are temporarily in Copenhagen. As they know the city and its services so well, these volunteers at ease orientating people around the city, providing invaluable support to the Madrid 2016 bid.
From many different backgrounds the volunteers range from Maria, who at 20 years old is the youngest volunteer, to Jorgen, who is Danish and the oldest at 63 years old. The majority of the 38 member volunteer group were recruited through the Spanish Embassy and 10 are students taking part in the Erasmus programme in the Danish capital. Their occupations range from lawyers, computer technicians, philologists, psychologists and communication executives to history graduates, political scientists and biologists.
All of the volunteers speak at least two languages and between them are able to communicate in a variety of languages including English, French, Danish, German, Norwegian, with the Madrid 2016 delegation even being able to count on Mandarin speakers.
The volunteers are based in hotels across the capital where those attending the 121st session of the IOC are staying. Most of the volunteers are at the Hotel D’Angleterre, which is the official base of the Madrid candidacy in Copenhagen. From here the Madrid 2016 bid, led by the Mayor of Madrid Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón, continues to provide information on the Madrid bid in the final days of the Olympic race. Other hotels where the volunteers are based include the Palace, the Plaza, the Royal, the Hilton, the Square and Scandinavia.
Madrid 2016 bid chief Mercedes Coghen said, “It is incredible that even in Copenhagen there are dedicated volunteers willing to give up their time to support Madrid’s bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2016. The support for Madrid’s bid is one of our greatest strengths – from the King of Spain and President Zapatero to our country’s sports stars and volunteers from around the world. We have all come here to do everything we can to help bring the Games to Madrid.”
