Japanese Prime Minister completes strongest ever Japanese Bid team
Prime Minister Hatoyama brings support of a nation to Tokyo 2016 in Copenhagen
28 September 2009, Tokyo, Japan – The new Prime Minister of Japan, Yukio Hatoyama, today announced he will fly to Copenhagen to offer the full support of his Government and the Japanese nation to Tokyo’s Bid to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games right in the heart of his country’s dynamic capital.
The man with in charge of the second largest economic power in the world will arrive ahead of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) 2016 Host City selection, where he will present to the esteemed members of the IOC at its 121st annual Session on 2 October.
Since taking office, Prime Minister Hatoyama has already offered the maximum level of support to Tokyo 2016 and the highest level of national guarantees to the Olympic Movement on behalf of the Government of Japan.
Dr. Ichiro Kono, Chair and CEO of Tokyo 2016, said:
“Prime Minister Hatoyama has a new vision for Japan, which will benefit the Olympic Movement if Tokyo is awarded the honour of hosting the 2016 Games.
“He brings with him the support of more than 100 million passionate sports fans in our nation and total guarantees for the IOC, which we know are extremely important in these difficult times globally.
“Under our new Prime Minister, Japan is striving for progress and ways to tackle the major challenges of the 21st Century. These are challenges to humanity, such as how to reconnect youth with sport, stop the deterioration of our planet and improve social mobility and inclusion.
“By hosting the 2016 Games in Tokyo, the Olympic Movement can be at the centre of this progress, for a happier, healthier future for the world.”
If Tokyo wins the right to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games it promises to deliver a 100-year sporting, social, economic and environmental legacy for Tokyo, Japan, Asia and the world.
This legacy includes reaching youth in new ways to reconnect them with Olympic and Paralympic sport, increasing global understanding of how to best care for the environment, driving an inclusive global society that is accessible for all, creating 161,000 new jobs and setting a new standard for sustainable development as a 21st Century showcase for the world.
