Team USA Clinches Berth in Final Round with 7-3 Victory over Mexico

Terry Tiffee goes 4-for-5 with two RBIs for the U.S.; Trevor Reckling Earns the Win

(VICENZA, Italy) – Daniel Descalso and Buck Coats each hit solo home runs and Team USA (7-1; 5-0) clinched a spot in the Final Round of the 2009 IBAF Baseball World Cup with a 7-3 victory over Mexico (5-4; 2-4) at Stadio Palladio in Vicenza, Italy.  The U.S. now boasts a 5-0 record in Round 2.

Lucas May kicked things off for the U.S. with an RBI double to the center field wall in the second inning and Jon Weber added a fielder’s choice in the fourth for an early 2-0 lead on Mexico starter Andres Meza.

Team USA then spread five runs over the next three innings to put Mexico away.  Descalso’s homer to right field scored Team U.S.A.’s third run, and a Terry Tiffee RBI single to right capped the scoring in the fifth. 

Coats added a solo shot to right-center in the sixth and Tiffee and Pedro Alvarez capped the U.S. run production with an RBI apiece in the seventh inning, clinching the 7-3 victory.

USA starter Trevor Reckling (2-0) gave up three runs in his five inning of work, striking out three batters for his second victory of the World Cup.  Ehren Wassermann pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the U.S. and Nate Field closed out the game in the ninth. 

Tiffee went 4-for-5 with two RBIs while Justin Smoak, Josh Kroeger and Lucas May finished with two hits apiece.

The U.S. will face Italy, Sunday, Sept. 20 at 8 p.m. (2 p.m. ET) at Stadio Paschetto Baseball I in Torino.  Italy dealt the U.S. its lone loss during its 2007 Baseball World Cup Championship run. Kasey Kiker is expected to take the mound for the Red, White and Blue.

Game Notes:

The defending champion Team USA clinched a spot in the Final Round of the 2009 IBAF Baseball World Cup with the 7-3 victory.  The Final Round will be played in Italy starting on Tuesday, September 22.

Trevor Plouffe has registered a hit in the last seven games, currently the longest hitting streak for Team USA in the 2009 World Cup.
