On this week’s ICC Cricket World audio show Australia captain Ricky Ponting looks ahead to the ICC Champions Trophy and believes Australia is still one of the top sides in the world.
The show this week also features vice-captain Michael Clarke, Nathan Bracken and Michael Hussey besides Ponting.
“We’ve got great depth in Australian cricket and I think this is one of the things that has held us ahead of the game for the last seven or eight years.
“We expect the young guys who come into the side to make an impact as well as those who have been in the side for some time,” said Ponting.
Clarke said: “We’ve obviously had a few key players retire since the last ICC Champions Trophy but we also have had some good young players come through who we all expect to make an impact this time round.”
The show can be used in whole or part by radio stations that want cricket content, while the public can also download it straight from the ICC website at http://icc-cricket.yahoo.net/media_interactive_zone/podcast.php#.
Simon Taufel of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires this week talks about mentoring umpires at the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division 6 in Singapore and also about the Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) which rolls into Test cricket from next month.
“I hope that my being in Singapore has helped the Associate and Affiliate, and the regional umpires that there is a way through in the sport to become one of the elite panel umpires and that anything is possible with hard work and determination,” said Taufel.
On the UDRS, Taufel said: “Technology is still about a balance in the game. We know the players want more correct decisions and we know statistically we get 95 per cent of our decisions right. But we also know there is room for improvement and we look for how we can get better as umpires.
“For me technology is about a balance and making sure we use the best of what is available but also making sure our umpiring skills are at their highest standard so we don’t have to always rely on the technology provided.”
Apart from these interviews, this week’s ICC Cricket World also includes the latest news from around the world as well as updates on the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings.
The weekly ICC Cricket World audio show runs for 15 minutes and has been put together by the ICC’s global broadcast partner ESPN STAR Sports.
