U.S. Olympic Committee Unveils Virtual Press Room at U.S. Olympic Team Media Summit
Site for U.S. Olympic Journalists Built Entirely on Microsoft Silverlight and SharePoint
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—At the 2010 U.S. Olympic Team Media Summit, comprised of more than 250 U.S. journalists, the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) today announced the launch of a new online site designed to enrich the media experience for journalists covering the 2010 U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Teams.
Using the latest versions of Microsoft’s Silverlight and SharePoint software, Microsoft has created the USOC’s Virtual Press Room as a world-class online media outlet for the journalists who will be covering America’s best winter athletes in Vancouver this February. Microsoft Silverlight is a web browser plug-in that works with Windows and Mac operating systems, as well as all major browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Internet Explorer. SharePoint is the business collaboration platform that connects and empowers people to work together in new and creative ways.
Along with improving the quality and breadth of Team USA coverage, the USOC’s Virtual Press Room will also improve USOC media capabilities by providing journalists with easy access to a wealth of athlete information.
Featured news sections, detailed article lists and live Twitter feeds from the USOC and Team USA athletes give the media a real time view into every event and breaking story.
“The new generation of Pressbox is one element of the USOC’s digital media strategy designed to motivate Olympic fans to engage in the Olympic Movement online,” said Trevor Miller, USOC Managing Director of Information Technology. “Using Microsoft technology, this re-designed site will showcase our commitment to innovation and capture the power of new media technologies and audiences to enable journalists to bring the best stories of Team USA to Americans.”
“We are excited to work with the USOC on the development of this new site,” said Chris Capossela, senior vice president of the Microsoft Business Division. “It is a perfect showcase of the power and flexibility of our technology to create an amazing user experience for journalists that cover the U.S. and Paralympic Teams.”
In addition to Microsoft developing and delivering a cutting-edge Virtual Press Room that enhances the USOC’s media-specific website, www.usocpressbox.org, Microsoft staff members are on-site at this year’s Media Summit providing demonstrations of the new pressbox site. The USOC and Microsoft will introduce the site modifications during a press conference on Friday, Sept. 11, at 9:20 a.m. at the Palmer House Hilton Grand Ballroom.
