Jets Sign P Weatherford and Waive P Trapasso

Steve Weatherford and A.J. Trapasso

September 7, 2009 – The New York Jets have signed free agent P Steve Weatherford and have waived P A.J. Trapasso.  The announcement was made by Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum.

Weatherford (P/6-3/210/Illinois/Terre Haute, IN) has been in the NFL for three seasons, playing in 46 games for New Orleans, Kansas City and Jacksonville.  In his career, he has a gross average of 43.4 yards on 199 punts.  He originally signed with New Orleans as an undrafted rookie free agent on May 16, 2006 and played in 39 games before he was waived on Oct. 20, 2008.  Weatherford was claimed off waivers by Kansas City on Oct. 22, 2008 and punted in two games before he was waived on Nov. 4, 2008.  Jacksonville signed him as a veteran free agent on Nov. 25, 2008, where he punted in the final five games.  He was released Sept. 5, 2009.

Trapasso (P/5-11/225/Ohio State/Pickerington, OH) was claimed off waivers from Tennessee on Sept. 6, 2009.  He originally signed with Tennessee as an undrafted free agent on April 30, 2009. Trapasso punted for four years at Ohio State and averaged 41.0 yards on 203 attempts with a long of 76 in 51 games as well as 10 touchbacks on 27 kickoffs. He was a Ray Guy Award semifinalist his senior season after averaging 41.4 yards on 58 punts with 21 punts inside-the-20.
