Rhythmic gymnastic World Championships showcase elite sport organisation in Japan

29th World Championships

Tokyo, 7 September 2009 – As the world’s top rhythmic gymnasts dazzle thousands of enthusiastic supporters with ropes, hoops, balls and ribbons at the sport’s 29th World Championships, the spectacle showcases the nation of Japan’s latest impressive display of international sport event management and organisation.

World-class gymnasts from around 50 countries are taking part in the event at the Mie Prefecture’s MIE Prefectural Sun Arena between 7 and 13 September. The event includes a star-studded field with the likes of 2008 Olympic gold-medallist, Yevgeniya Kanayeva, and 2007 World Champion, Anna Bessonova. Individual and team competitions are being held at the event, which is being hosted by the Federation Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) in cooperation with the Japan Gymnastic Association (JGA), the Mie Prefectural Government and the Mie Gymnastic Association (MGA).

Japan has successfully hosted top-level international sporting competitions over the last decade, including 112 events in 29 Olympic sports. Recent examples across a diversity of sports include the World Table Tennis Championships in April 2009, the 2009 Laser Radial (sailing) World Championships in July 2009 and the triathlon 2009 ITU World Championship Series, hosted in Yokohama, in August 2009.

A combination of outstanding infrastructure, state-of-the-art competition venues, efficient operations and the incredible enthusiasm of Japan’s volunteers and supporters are at the heart of them all, and Japan is harnessing all these qualities for its Bid to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games in its dynamic capital city.

Dr Ichiro Kono, Chair and CEO of Tokyo 2016, said:

“We are all delighted to welcome the world’s top rhythmic gymnasts to Japan. Our nation has consistently demonstrated that it is an incredible stage for athletes and competitions of any description, and this is reflected in how we are setting the stage for heroes though Tokyo 2016. The most compact, sustainable and athlete-friendly Games plan in history will draw on our wealth of experience in hosting world class sporting events to ensure memorable performances from athletes, and inspire new generations to engage in sport and healthy living.”
