Senegal's Assane breaks new ground

AIBA World Championships - Milan

Faye Assane of Senegal started boxing in 2006 at the ripe old age of 23. Before that he practised kick-boxing. “It seems it was a good decision,” said the light-heavyweight of the switch.

Assane had an opportunity to train at the AIBA International Training Camp in Assisi before the AIBA World Championships in Milan and tonight he took a huge step forward by beating Dzemal Bosniac of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“Beating a European boxer is a very difficult task, therefore I am extremely proud of this accomplishment,” Assane said. “I had never boxed in Europe or any major international championship before I came here to Milan with my Italian coach Carmine Fracasso. For me, boxing at the AIBA World Championships and winning a match is something unbelievable.”

There was a surprise in Ring A when Imre Szello of Hungary, gold medallist at this year’s European Championships and seeded sixth here in Milan, clearly lost to Kim Dong Hoe of Korea. Kim’s entirely unorthodox style posed big problems for Szello, who was unable to solve the riddle. Both boxers took standing eight counts but Kim’s superiority was obvious.

“No matter how unusual Kim’s boxing style was, it was completely according to the rules so we cannot complain,” said veteran Imre Szántó, one of the coaches of the Hungarian team. “Szello was unable to score hits, that was the problem.”
