Boxing: Eric Donovan leads from the front
AIBA World Championships in Milan
The 24-year-old Eric Donovan of Ireland, from St. Michael’s Club of Athy, had been awarded the co-captaincy of his national team shortly before the AIBA World Championships in Milan. He led by example in the first round of the lightweight category at the Mediolanum Forum this evening, beating Bakhodir Karimov of Kirgyzstan 13-4.
“This is my third World Championships, I am one of the more
experienced boxers on the national squad so I must lead by example,” he
said. “I tried to keep the pressure on for the entire nine minutes and
I was successful.”
Russian Albert Selimov, world champion in
the 57kg category in 2007 and European champion in the same weight
class a year earlier, had moved up to 60kg for this event but the
change seemed not to have taken away from his punching power. The
23-year-old southpaw from the southern town of Kaspiysk floored Afghan
Mohammad Aziz in the first round of their clash, then went on to score
a comfortable 25-1 win.
Jonas Moeti of Botswana was on the verge of causing a sensational surprise but 21-year-old Ecuadorian Erick Bone came back to win their clash by RSC in the third round. “I started slowly, but thanks to the encouraging words of my coach in the first intermission I was able to win,” he said. “This is my first World Championship and I am happy to move in to the last 32.”
Chinese boxers are unbeaten so far at this World Championships, Hu Qianxun managing to preserve his country’s perfect record by overcoming Maltese lightweight Haithem Laamouz 12-1 score.
