Madrid 2016 Delighted that IOC Report Praises Well-Constructed and Very Compact Bid
Madrid encouraged by report highlights
Madrid, 2 September 2009 - Leaders of the Madrid 2016 Olympic bid today welcomed the publication of the IOC Evaluation Commission’s report.
Madrid 2016 is encouraged that the report highlights the high quality of the bid for the Olympics and Paralympics and in particular:
- the highly compact concept
- the legacy programme
- the strong support and financial commitment from all three levels of government
- the 85% public support in Madrid and 86% nationally
- the comprehensive environmental and sustainability programme integrating economic, social and environmental parameters
- significant involvement of Spanish athletes in the planning
- the balanced and guaranteed OCOG budget
- the excellent infrastructure and a well-trained and equipped security and public safety apparatus
- one of the leading transport systems in Europe
- that 17 of the 33 venues already exist, with no further permanent work required
- a vision for the 2016 Games based on the city’s sporting traditions
Madrid also welcomes the Commission’s recognition that it is so strongly motivated to host the Games by the values of sport and Olympism centred on social and physical regeneration, underlined by the motto ‘The Games with the Human Touch’.
The report states: “The Madrid 2016 plan, vision and sports concept is well constructed, very compact and complemented by the city’s sports event experience and existing infrastructure and sports venues. The social impact, through community sports programmes and post-Games use of the city-owned Olympic Village development entirely for social housing, is a significant feature of Madrid’s 2016 vision.”
Mercedes Coghen, CEO of Madrid 2016, said: “We thank the IOC Evaluation Commission for their report and welcome the findings whole-heartedly. We believe that Madrid will host the best ever Games.”
The Mayor of Madrid, Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón, said: “It is a tribute to our great capital city and to all the hard work of the bid team that the report highlights so many positives.
“The people of Madrid and the whole of Spain overwhelmingly support the bid, as do all the political parties, the business community and the Royal Family.
“This report has encouraged us all to continue to work as hard as we can to achieve success on October 2nd and bring the Olympic and Paralympic Games to Madrid in 2016.”
Mercedes Coghen added, “We also note where the Commission has raised issues. We look forward to reassuring the IOC by clarifying these points of detail in the run up to Copenhagen.”
