2010 SPORTACCORD COMBAT GAMES: ONE YEAR TO GO!

First edition of the martial arts games comprising 13 sports.

In exactly a year’s time, on 27 August 2010, the world’s best martial arts and combat sports athletes, from 13 International Federations, will gather in Beijing for the Opening Ceremony of the first edition of the SportAccord Combat Games.

The 13 sports, Aikido, Boxing, Ju-Jitsu, Judo, Karate, Kendo, KickBoxing, Muaythai, Sambo, Sumo, Taekwondo, Wrestling and Wushu, will be showcased in the Olympic City during eight days of competition, from 28 August to 4 September 2010. The International Federations will each select their 80 best athletes, men and women, through their respective qualification systems, making up an overall contingent of more than 1000 athletes.

Since the agreement between the city of Beijing and SportAccord was signed on March 2009, the preparations for the 2010 SportAccord Combat Games have been in full swing. The Chinese capital is making the most of its Olympic legacy, the three competition venues selected for the Combat Games having hosted Olympic events.

The Beijing Organising Committee for the 2010 SportAccord Combat Games has been running since May 2009, rapidly setting up its structure to carry out the Combat Games organisation. SportAccord ensures the coordination of the event; it is working hand-in-hand with the Beijing local organisers by providing guidelines for the various fields of event operations.

The SportAccord Sports Commission was created to manage the preparation of the sports operations and is made up of 13 technical delegates appointed by their respective International Federation. Their first meeting took place on 27-30 July 2009 in Beijing to visit the venues and set the requirements for each sport.

As the SportAccord Combat Games will be a unique opportunity for all the martial arts and combat games sports to be together on one stage, a cultural programme is being prepared to highlight the ancient traditions and social values that they each convey.
