Building tradition: winning as a team!
The World Archery Championships Ulsan 2009 will be held on 1-9 September in Korea. Korea and the USA have been two dominant countries in team competitions at world championships.
Other nations have won as well, but it is more difficult to win in the long run as a team. The countries absolutely need three top archers to form a top team. It usually does not come with luck. It comes from a deep, long-term programme to develop archery in the country. Who are then the favourite teams in Ulsan?
Let’s have a look at FITA statistics compiled by Sergio FONT to define who has dominated team competitions at world archery main events since 2004. This included 20 competitions for recurve and 18 for compound. A look at all the medallists since Jakarta 1995—when compound was introduced in the world championships—is also interesting.
Winning as a team both demands and creates dynamism. It needs good team chemistry on the field. A victory also gives momentum to the whole country. The young archers back home will be motivated to walk on the footsteps of their glorious winners. It builds tradition!
