Madrid 2016 Envoy Adds to Spanish Sporting Success with Bronze Medal in Berlin

Garcia Bragado achieves personal best time for the year

Madrid, 21 August Madrid 2016 envoy Jesús Ángel García Bragado has today won bronze medal in the 50km race walk at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin, continuing Spanish success in the highest level of international sport.

 
Garcia Bragado, achieved his personal best time for the year as he overtook Australian athlete Jared Tallent with less than 3km to go to clinch the bronze medal. The Bronze medal achieved by Garcia Bragado is added to the Gold medal won by Marta Domínguez in the 3,000m steeple chase earlier this week.

 
The Madrid-born athlete, 40 years of age and one of Spain’s most experienced competing athletes since his debut at the age of 16, is one of many Spanish sporting names who is an envoy for the Madrid bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2016. He has previously won gold (Stuttgart ’93) and silver (Athens ’97 and Edmonton 2001).

 
Madrid 2016 bid-leader Mercedes Coghen said: “Central to the Madrid 2016 project is that successful competing athletes such as Jesús Ángel García Bragado work with us to ensure our city will deliver the best sporting environment possible for athletes. Spain is one of the world’s most successful sporting nations and we are delighted for Jesús Ángel whose latest medal confirms his status as an experienced and successful athlete.”

 
The Madrid 2016 delegation, including CEO Mercedes Coghen, Mayor of Madrid Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón, Spain’s IOC member Juan Antonio Samaranch Jnr, Director of Sport Raúl Chapado and Managing Director Antonio Fernández Arimany, has been in Berlin to learn as much as possible from the athletes’ own experiences at the 12th IAAF World Championships.
