Australia contributes to growth of Asian football

Australia's football leaders are in Kuala Lumpur at Asian Football Confederation

Australia’s football leaders are in Kuala Lumpur at Asian Football Confederation (AFC) headquarters for the next two days participating in important AFC meetings.
 
“It’s indicative of Australia’s growing credibility and reputation in Asia that we now have a number of representatives on various key committees,” according to Football Federation Australia (FFA) CEO, Ben Buckley.
 
These include FFA Board Member, and former Matildas vice-captain, Moya Dodd as a Vice-President of the AFC Executive as well as Chairman of the AFC Legal Committee.
 
Buckley has also been appointed a member of the AFC Committee for Professional Leagues as well as Chairman of the AFC Committee for Professional Clubs.
 
Last year, FFA Chairman, Frank Lowy AC was appointed as a member of FIFA’s Organising Committee for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
 
“Appointments to committee such as these reflect well on football in Australia, and show that our contribution is recognised and valued in the broader football world,” Buckley said.
 
“The work of these committees also help us learn from other member associations, and build our networks amongst the football community.”
 
Buckley said the work of the committees for professional clubs and leagues are crucial to the future of football in Asia.
 
“Professionally run clubs, leagues and Member Associations are at the heart of development required within the Asian Confederation.
 
“There is enormous scope for growth in football in Asia.
 
“More people from Asia watched the 2006 FIFA World Cup than any other part of the world, and this will be exceeded at next year’s FIFA World Cup.
 
“Our aim within AFC is to ensure our clubs, leagues and Member Associations are working professionally and effectively to enable Asia to be one of the powerhouses of world football,” Buckley said.
