THE FUTURE OF JUDO JOINS TOGETHER IN BUDAPEST

The new judo generation joins together in Budapest this week for the I World Cadet Championships (U17)

They are like diamond stones and need to be brought into shape little by little. The new judo generation joins together in Budapest this week for the I World Cadet Championships (U17). The competition features young talents, who aim to represent their countries in the first ever Youth Olympic Games, to be held in Singapore in 2010. Traditional judo nations such as Japan, Russia, France, Korea, Brazil and other are to be seen on the mat with their boys and girls showing the best of their techniques.

The final numbers are yet to be confirmed in the congress, but the online inscription has already received around 500 athletes applications from 70 countries. The competition will take place at the Papp Laszlo Sports Arena from 6th to 9th August, starting the preliminary block daily at 10:00 with final session starting at 15:00.

Some differences between the adult and junior events had to be done to fit this young group of athletes aged 15 and 16 years old (born in 1992 and 1993): there will be eight male and eight female weight divisions instead of the traditional seven Olympic divisions. The lightest boys category will be under 50kg  (feather weight), with the extra light-weight being for judoka under 55kg (instead of 60kg). The male heavy-weight means athletes are over 90kg (instead of over 100kg). For the girls the scene is similar: starts with feather weight at -40kg, going up to extra light-weight at -44kg (instead of -48kg) until the heavy-weights being over 70kg (and not the traditional over 78kg). Contests last four minutes (not five as usually) and golden score if necessary will have one minute less than normally – two minutes. The competition system includes repechage for the quarter-final losers (last eight).

About the Youth Olympic Games: It is the first ever event for young athletes organized by the International Olympic Committee. It will take place between 14th to 26th August 2010 and 3600 athletes are expected to compete in 26 sports. The athletes overall will have between 14 and 18 years old, depending on the discipline. Along with the sports competition, there will be Culture and Education programs. To know more go to http://www.singapore2010.sg
