India joins the list of winners!

Today was the last day in Ogden, Utah (USA) with the individual final matches. The cadets shot in the morning.

The Indian Deepika KUMARI won the recurve women title, while KIM Joo-Wan (KOR) was crowned for the boys. It was another double for USA in compound with Alexander SAHI and Paige PEARCE. The latter even broke the world record on the way!

Recurve Cadet Men

Gold medal match: KIM Joo Wan (KOR) vs MIN Taehong (KOR)

A Korean duel with two well-developed athletes! KIM was in the final last year in Antalya but he only got silver, meaning he surely wanted to do better this time and he took a 1-point lead in the first end, 28-27.

MIN took the second end 28-27 and the scores were tied at 55-55. Then both archers turned it up in the third end with two perfect 30s! Suspense until the end!

Then both archers had another 10, a 9 just outside the 10 ring and then KIM shot a 9 but MIN only managed an 8. With a score of 113-112, KIM became the cadet world champion!

Bronze medal match: SMITH Hector Antonio (MEX) vs BORO Sanjay (IND)

Mexico was back on the field again this morning with SMITH. He shot a bit high on the target and caught 9s, an 8 and a 7. BORO was more levelled and more consistent in the yellow. End after end the Indian built a lead and led 81-78.

SMITH kept looking for solutions but he could not get his rhythm. BORO finished well with a 10-10-9 and won bronze, 110-105.

Recurve Cadet Women

Gold medal match: KUMARI Deepika (IND) vs TSYREMPILOVA Sayana (RUS)

KUMARI put in an impressive performance with ends of 29, 29 and 28. She took a 6-point lead 86-60.

TSYREMPILOVA finished with a nice 10-10-9, but KUMARI stayed great 9-10-10. This was an excellent performance for KUMARI to clinch the gold medal 115-109!

Bronze medal match: JEON Hunyoung (KOR) vs CHOI Youri (KOR)

A Korean duel for bronze and worth noting that no Korean will shoot in the gold final in this category! JEON had the best start and did not miss gold until her ninth arrow. That put her in a commanding lead 84-80.

CHOI tried to put a comeback together in the last end with a 10-9-9.

However JEON followed the Korean tradition. She stayed solid with two 9s and finished with a 10. Pure Korean fashion: take a lead, control the match and end with a 10. Bronze for JEON, 112-108.

Compound Cadet Men

Gold medal match: van BARBIERI Jaime (AUS) vs SAHI Alexander (USA)

Van BARBIERI shot another perfect 30 this morning (there were a lot of them). He took a 1-point lead. Then both archers shot 28. Then SAHI scored 9-9-10, while van BARBIERI could not hit the 10 in the third end. Scores were tied but the Australian kept the advantage of shooting last.

SAHI had 9. Van BARBIERI had an X10. SAHI had a 9, Van BARBIERI had a 9. The American had an X10! The Australian needed a 10 to win, but his arrow just out in the 9 for a 113-113 score, shoot-off!

A 10 for SAHI and the crowd went crazy! It did calm down to let Van BARBIERI shoot. It was a 9 for the Australian. Gold medal for USA!

Bronze medal match: CARDOSO Mario (MEX) vs WHITING Riley (USA)

Another Mexican-American duel! CARDOSO took a 2-point advantage early on thanks to a perfect 30.

WHITTING comes from Logan, just 30 miles away from Ogden and had a lot of supporters but that was not enough today. He could not pull the Mexican, who did not have a single arrow out of the gold, back. Victory for CARDOSO, 115-111!

Compound Cadet Women

Gold medal match: SARAI SALINAS Stephanie (MEX) vs PEARCE Paige (USA)

Like yesterday, the fans were cheering loudly for “Mexico” and “USA”. Mexico was actually winning the cheering battle on the stand, but on the field the American was dominant. PEARCE had 10-10-10, 10-10-9 and 10-10-10 to lead 89-82.

The American was just shy of another perfect end to break the individual match world record. She shot a 10 just inside, another 10 just inside and it came down to the last arrow. PEARCE shot a 9 just high off the 10-ring. With a 118, PEARCE put in a great performance to beat SALINAS and take the gold medal!

Bronze medal match: VERMEULEN Jody (NED) vs NIETO TALADRIZ Clara (ESP)

There was not much wind this morning on Ogden’s baseball stadium Lindquist Field, the stage for the finals of these World Archery Youth Championships.

NIETO TALADRIZ had a fantastic start: 10-10-9 in the first end and 10-10-10 in the second end to take a commanding lead 59-56! The Spanish archer then controlled to the match to keep a 2-point victory, 113-111.
