POSSIBLE QUARTERFINAL PAIRINGS FOR 2009 LAMAR HUNT U.S. OPEN CUP SET

Matchups To Be Determined After Third Round Play on June 30

CHICAGO (June 18, 2009) – U.S. Soccer has determined the possible pairings for the quarterfinals of the 2009 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The matches will be played on July 7 and feature the winners of the tournament’s third round matches, to be played on June 30 and July 1 across the United States.

Eight MLS teams enter the tournament in the third round, including defending champions D.C. United and four-time Open Cup champion Chicago Fire. One PDL team remains standing after the Ocean City Barons upset Real Maryland F.C., while for the second year in a row two USL2 teams also advanced to the third round. With six of the eight MLS teams having to travel as the away team, the next round is filled with possible upsets in the making.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the U.S. Soccer Federation’s national championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. It is the oldest national annual tournament for team sports in U.S. history and among the oldest soccer tournaments of its type in the world. In 1999, the competition was renamed to honor long-time soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.
