Madrid celebrates first ever ‘Integration Games’ in a weekend of Sport for Everyone

The event is part of a pioneering initiative to promote healthy coexistence in the Region of Madrid.

Madrid, 12 June 2009 – More than 5,000 people from different backgrounds and sporting ability are expected to take part in Madrid’s inaugural ‘Integration Games’ this Saturday, 13 June.  The event is part of a pioneering initiative to promote healthy coexistence in the Region of Madrid through the practice of sport.
Organised in conjunction with the Madrid 2016 Olympic and Paralympic bid, Council of Madrid, Ministry for Immigration of the Community of Madrid, and the Higher Council for Sport in Spain, amongst others, the ‘Integration Games’ is Spain’s biggest multicultural event, encouraging and celebrating the integration of cultures and exchange of experiences in Madrid and throughout the world.
Ahead of Madrid’s second annual Sports Day which takes place on Sunday 14 June, the ‘Integration Games’  will be held at the sporting facilities of Madrid University and will see both able-bodied and disabled participants compete in diverse sporting disciplines including basketball, softball, 7-a-side rugby, table tennis and volleyball.
In recognition of the importance of sport in bringing people of all cultures together, the ‘Integration Games’ will also host a 7 km race to raise funds for UNICEF. It is hoped the race will raise € 20,000 for UNICEF to support the organisation’s integration projects around the world.
Speaking about Madrid 2016’s involvement in the Integration Games, bid chief Mercedes Coghen said: “The Integration Games is an original concept that fits in with Madrid’s spirit and Olympic bid.  With people from so many different countries living together in the city, we need to find a common language and that language is sport.  That is why we call Madrid 2016 the ‘Games with the human touch’, because we already understand that sport has the power to unite.  I look forward to the Integration Games becoming an important, permanent fixture on Madrid’s calendar.”
