Madrid Welcomes "vote of confidence"

Basketball World Championship decision “vote of confidence in Spain says Madrid Olympic Bid leader.

 
 
Spain has won the right to host the Men’s World Basketball Championships in 2014. The decision has been welcomed by leaders of the Madrid 2016 Olympic Bid who say it is a further “vote of confidence” in Spain’s ability to host major international sporting events.  


The board of basketball’s governing body FIBA picked Spain, the defending champions ahead of rival candidates China and Italy.


Mercedes Coghen, CEO of Madrid’s bid to host the Olympics and Paralympics said: “It is an honour for my country to host such a prestigious sporting event as the men’s world championships in basketball. Spain has successfully hosted hundreds of major international sports events in the past 10 years, many of them in Madrid where we hope we will see the Olympics in  seven years time. We thank FIBA for their vote of confidence in Spain’s ability to host great sport.”     


Spain won the 2006 world championship in Japan beating Greece 70-47 in the final. The United States defeated Argentina in the bronze-medal match. Spain will defend its title when Turkey hosts the forthcoming tournament in 2010.
Madrid’s plans for 2016 Olympics include a new basketball arena.

o    MADRID/Palacio de los Deportes/15,000 seats/2005 or Valdebebas Arena/18,000 seats/to be completed in 2013

o    BILBAO/Bizkaia Arena/17,000 seats/2004

o    GRANADA/Palacio Municipal de Deportes/12,000 seats/will be completed in 2012

o    LAS PALMAS/Gran Canaria Sports Center/10,000 seats/reconstruction in 2012

o    SEVILLA/New Palacio Municipal/15,000 seats/will be completed in 2012


2. Proposed dates:

o    30th August-14th September 2014
    

3. Budgets:

o    Operational Budget: 27.5 million Euros

o    Infrastructure Budget: 314 million Euros for arenas (estimation)
