BRAZILIAN CONGRESS REITERATES SUPPORT FOR RIO 2016

Rio 2016 Bid Committee outlines the city’s Olympic plans to Tourism and Sports Commission

Rio, 21 May 2009 – The Rio 2016 Bid Committee described the city’s vision for hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games yesterday during a meeting at the Brazilian Congress, in Brasilia.

The presentation for the Tourism and Sports Commission was enthusiastically received by deputies, who reiterated their full support for the Rio 2016 campaign. After the meeting, Carlos Arthur Nuzman, President of the Bid Committee, and Carlos Roberto Osório, Secretary General of the Bid, met with the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Michel Temer.

Over the course of the two hour presentation, Nuzman and Osório provided details of the bid to the Tourism and Sports Commission members. “It was a great opportunity to update deputies about the Rio 2016 campaign’s progress. One of the pillars of our bid is the synergy between the three levels of government and the support of the Legislature is fundamental,” said Nuzman.

The President of the Tourism and Sports Commission, Federal Deputy Afonso Hamm, also accompanied President Lula during the IOC Evaluation Commission’s visit to Rio earlier this month. “This is a project for the entire country, not just for Rio de Janeiro. The Olympic and Paralympic Games in Brazil will be an excellent opportunity to contribute to the ongoing transformation of Brazil and strengthen the country on the world’s international stage,” said Hamm.
