Madrid 2016 explains its numbers to the IOC
Mercedes Coghen, and the Vice Mayor of Madrid, Manuel Cobo summarized the third day
Madrid, 7 May 2009 - Madrid 2016 CEO, Mercedes Coghen, and the Vice Mayor of Madrid, Manuel Cobo, have summarized the third day of the IOC Evaluation Commission’s visit as “very productive and progressive” in explaining the details of Madrid’s bid.
The members of the Evaluation Commission have followed with interest Madrid’s presentations of the Paralympic Games; structure and political and economic climate; legal aspects; customs and immigration formalities; finance; and marketing. It was described as a “very technical and in-depth” day, by Mercedes Coghen, in which there were a lot of numbers. However, there was no shortage of emotional moments thanks to the participation of the Paralympic swimmer and Madrid 2016 messenger, Teresa Perales. She gained the appreciation and applause of the IOC members when she “demonstrated the passion that Spanish athletes – both Olympic and non-Olympic – have”, according to Coghen. In addition to the presentations, there was opportunity for further questions about yesterday’s venue tour. “The venue analysis has been very good,” stated the CEO, as she stressed that members of the IOC have been impressed with the venues of a very solid project. Manuel Cobo admitted that the tour of the venues was the most important day of the week as it demonstrates, in a very tangible way, that Madrid is more than ready to host the 2016 Games. However, he stressed that today’s work was also crucial to the give the IOC members the full picture and guarantees they are looking for in candidate cities. The Vice Mayor highlighted Club Madrid 16 President Antonio Garrigues’s final words to the IOC members after explaining the legal aspects of the bid: “This city has an extremely high per capita happiness index”. This is reflected in the fact that 85% of Madrileños support the bid, according to the recently undertaken IOC polls, and that surpasses the figure obtained at this same time by the previous bid. - ENDS –
