Tokyo 2016 Statement on Public Support
Following media speculation regarding the IOC Opinion Poll to measure the public support for Tokyo 2016, Dr Ichiro Kono, Chair and CEO of Tokyo 2016, has issued the following statement:
“Tokyo 2016 has been informed of the IOC public opinion poll conducted in February 2009. We respect the decision of the IOC to release the data in their report in September. But we can confirm that since the highly successful IOC Evaluation visit, our own polls and independent polls consistently show high rates of support.” “The most recent of these independent polls was conducted by Yomiuri Shimbun (on April 27th/28th, 2009) amongst 3,000 eligible voters. This poll showed national support for Tokyo 2016 had risen to 76% (97 Million Japanese). “Whatever poll is used, we can state with certainty that over 20 million supporters of Tokyo 2016 live within a short journey of 97% of all proposed Olympic venues. So we can confidently predict full stadiums for every event ensuring the stage is set for Olympic and Paralympic heroes. “We continue to gain public support in Tokyo and across Japan as Japanese people clearly understand the long term benefits that the Games in 2016 will bring to Japanese sport, society and economy as well as to the long term peace and stability of the region. “Finally Tokyo 2016 is assured massive TV viewing figures both in Japan and across the whole Asian region with 3 billion potential viewers in Japan’s prime time TV viewing footprint. This will make a significant contribution to the Olympic Movement. “Tokyo 2016 continues setting the stage for heroes.”
“A poll commissioned by Tokyo 2016 in January had 69% of Tokyo citizens (23 million people) supporting Tokyo 2016. Following the IOC Evaluation Commission Visit, we have commissioned another poll. The results from this poll will be issued very soon and we are confident they will show increasing support for Tokyo 2016.
“Importantly, last month’s Yomiuri Shimbun poll revealed that 82% of Japanese in their 20’s support Tokyo 2016. This is absolutely in-keeping with the IOC’s ambition of making the Games, sport and the Olympic Movement more relevant to young people.
