GENEVA, Switzerland/AUCKLAND, New Zealand/28th April 2009 – FIBA, in cooperation with Basketball New Zealand, would like to announce the launching of newzealand2009.fiba.com, the official website for the FIBA U19 World Champion

ship for Men that will take place in Auckland (New Zealand) from 2nd to 12th July 2009.

newzealand2009.fiba.com includes all-event related information on the world’s most prestigious basketball youth championship and will feature, during the competition itself, live results and stats of all games, game reports and previews, hundreds of action photos, interviews and blogs.

The 9th edition of the FIBA U19 World Championship, a tournament featuring 16 teams comprised of players born in 1990 or after, will be played in the 5.000-seat North Shore Event Centre and in the 2.500-seat ASB Stadium located in Auckland, New Zealand

As of 2007, the FIBA U19 World Championship for Men is played every two years, in odd years. The FIBA U19 World Championship, which was first played in 1979 in Brazil

, determines the best basketball nation of the world in this age category.

Current icons such as Andrew Bogut (Australia), Vince Carter (United States), Pau Gasol (Spain), Andrei Kirilenko (Russia) and Luis Scola (Argentina) have all played in previous FIBA U19 World Champion

ships.

The USA has won the tournament’s gold medal three times (1979, 1983 and 1991), while Serbia (2007), Australia (2003), Greece (1995), Spain (1999) and Yugoslavia

(1987) have each captured the title once.
