FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup qualifier in Mexico postponed
The CONCACAF zone qualifier for the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup and 2009
CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship that was scheduled to be played in Puerto Vallarta (Mexico) from Wednesday 29 April to Sunday 3 May 2009 has been postponed due to the growing concerns over the outbreak of swine flu in Mexico.
CONCACAF and FIFA jointly took the decision to postpone this event as a precautionary measure following discussions with the local organising committee BSWW. It has not yet been decided when the qualifier will be played and different options are currently being evaluated with the local authorities.
On Monday, CONCACAF announced the cancellation of the semi-finals and final of the confederation’s U-17 Championship in Tijuana (Mexico), which also serves as qualifier for the FIFA U-17 World Cup Nigeria 2009. The four teams that reached the semi-finals, Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico and the USA, had already clinched their berths for the tournament in Nigeria.
In addition, the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions League final between Mexican sides Cruz Azul and Atlante FC, which was due to be played on 29 April in Cancun (Mexico), has now been postponed until May 12. The winner of that final will qualify for the FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2009.
