Cairo, 15 April 2009 – The 2009 Modern Pentathlon World Cup season continues in Cairo, Egypt from 16-19 April. On home soil, the Egyptian team is strong with 17 men and 8 women to compete, including Aya Medany who took the gold in the first World Cup in Mexico. Among Medany’s competitors will be Heather Fell (GBR) 2008 Olympic Silver medallist and highest ranked woman in the world at the end of 2008 and double World Champion (2007/2008) Amelie Cazé of France.

In the men’s competition, Andrey Moiseev (RUS) double Olympic Champion (2004 / 2008) will again miss a competition due to injury he suffered just prior to the Mexico World Cup. However compatriot, Ilia Frolov, World Champion 2008 will be in form for his first international competition of the season. 2008 Olympic silver medallist, Edvinas Krungolcas (LTU) will also make his season debut.

In total 71 men representing 22 countries and 49 women representing 16 nations will compete in the qualification rounds to determine the top 36 who move through to the finals (Saturday/Sunday).

For the second time this year the new combined event format will add an element of excitement and anticipation to the competition following the success of its inauguration in Mexico. Adopted by the UIPM Congress in November 2008, the combined event adds an even more enthralling finish to this great sport.  The combined event is the continuous combination of the shoot and run disciplines, where athletes commence with 5 shots (in time limit of 70 seconds) followed by 1km run. This is repeated two further times for a total of 15 shots and 3km run. For more information on the combined event see www.pentathlon.org

So that fans around the world can watch these great athletes, and share in the excitement of the combined event, the UIPM will broadcast the finals live via internet TV on 18 and 19 April.  The broadcast will include highlights of the fence and swim events as well as live coverage of the riding and combined events. Locally, Egypt TV Nilesat Sport channel will broadcast the event live throughout the four days of competition.

The Cairo World Cup is the second in a series of 5 events which will culminate in the World Cup final to be held in Rio de Janeiro 12-13 September. The first event was in Mexico 26-29 March.
