Tokyo ready to light up for IOC Evaluation Commission

The IOC Evaluation Commission are in Tokyo 14-20 April 2009.

10 April 2009 – Tokyo, the world’s largest metropolitan area with a population of 34 million people, has been transformed over the last few months into one giant Tokyo 2016 supporter, with branding promoting its Bid to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games now at every turn as Japan’s vibrant capital awaits the arrival of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Evaluation Commission.

Streets, parks, bridges, sports stadiums, shops, taxis, buses and trains are all displaying Tokyo 2016 signs and messages. Tens of thousands of citizens – young and old – are walking around Tokyo with Bid badges as just one way they are expressing their active support, as well as participating in countless Tokyo 2016 sports events and festivals.

Tokyo 2016 today revealed plans for Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) buildings to light up in spectacular Olympic colours during the IOC Evaluation Commission, including the iconic Tokyo Tower city landmark and ‘TMG Towers’, headquarters of the metropolitan administration.

The domestic marketing campaign in Tokyo and across Japan has been in full swing for months, but the city’s administration is now making every effort to demonstrate to the IOC during their visit the strong domestic support for hosting the most compact, sustainable and eco-friendly Olympic and Paralympic Games ever, right in the heart of city life.

Dr. Ichiro Kono, Chair and CEO of Tokyo 2016, said:

“Next week is the most important week of my life. But it’s not just about me or the Tokyo 2016 Bid Committee; we are enjoying fantastic domestic support in Tokyo and across Japan for our Bid. I’m proud to say more than 90 million people in our nation now recognise the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to inspire a new 21st Century legacy.

“Our 100-year legacy promise will benefit youth and people across the world, once again demonstrating the power of the Olympic Movement as a force for good. It will be a privilege to welcome the experts of the IOC Evaluation Commission to Tokyo.”

The IOC Evaluation Commission are in Tokyo 14-20 April 2009. Their official visit takes place 16-19 April 2009.
