First Sochi 2014 Power Supply Center Completed

Poselkovaya will support the development of Sochi 2014 venues

9 April 2009, Sochi, Russia – Dmitry Kozak, Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, has opened the first power supply centre in Krasnaya Polyana, as preparations continue for Russia’s first Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

The new substation,  Poselkovaya, will support the development of Sochi 2014 venues, as well as provide energy to the entire Krasnaya Polyana region.

Building of the new substation began in August 2007, with 52-kilometer power lines being laid from the Psou substation. This type of development is relatively new to the region, with the first large facility in the mountains - the Krasnopolyanskaya hydro-electric power station - having opened in 1947.

Dimitry Kozak, Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, said:
“This substation will connect 100 major buildings to energy lines, improving the infrastructure and development of the region as we build towards the Sochi 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Demand for clean energy will increase before, during and after Sochi 2014, and the opening of this substation will play a major part in fulfilling that need.”

The capacity of the Poselkovaya substation is 170 megawatts. In addition to Olympic and regional infrastructure facilities, it will provide energy for the Caucasian biosphere reserve, native plants park and a planned ornithology park.

The opening of the power supply center is one of many measures designed to not only protect, but to enhance the unique environment of the Krasnaya Polyana Region, such as strict requirements to use the latest, greenest technology in the development of Olympic venues. Through developing expertise during the sustainable construction of Sochi 2014 venues, Russia’s first Winter Games will leave a genuine legacy for environmentally-friendly construction across the whole of Russia.

Sochi 2014 will also implement Green Standards during Games-related construction. This involves ensuring that environmentally-friendly building materials, renewable energy sources, waste and pollution management and reduction systems are all used in Olympic preparation. In addition, it will ensure that water and energy resources are utilized efficiently.
