AMERICAS SPORTS COUNCIL SIGNS MOTION SUPPORTING RIO 2016
Rio 2016 Bid plans presented to General Assembly of CADE
Rio, 18 March 2009 – Rio de Janeiro’s bid to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games received a significant boost yesterday from the 26 countries participating in the XI General Assembly of the Americas Sports Council (CADE) in Panama. A motion supporting Rio’s bid was signed following a presentation of the city’s plans by Wadson Ribeiro, Executive Secretary of Brazil’s Sports Ministry, with the participation of Mário Cilenti, Rio 2016’s International Relations Director.
Ribeiro explained that hosting the Games in Rio could generate vast opportunities for South America and developing nations around the world. “The Rio 2016 Games could leave a significant legacy for the people of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil but also for all of South America and Latin American people everywhere. In recognition of this, I welcome the support of all the nations represented here today. It is essential for Latin American countries to unite for South America to receive the Olympic and Paralympic Games for the first time. This would be a historic victory for all of us and open doors for the entire continent,” he said.
Mário Cilenti provided an overview of the Rio 2016 Games Plan and the benefits the Olympic Games in Rio could deliver for Latin American countries. One of the principal themes of his presentation was the Olympic Training Center, set in Barra da Tijuca, which will include facilities for training and competition in 22 sports. “The Olympic Training Center will develop elite sport in Brazil and Latin America. This high quality training facility will strengthen Latin American sport and enable the region’s countries aspire to more Olympic medals in the future,” explained Cilenti.
Andrés Cárdenas, Rio 2016’s International Relations Manager, and José Leite, Sports Ministry International Adviser, also took part in the event. The Americas Sports Council brings together representatives of governmental sports organizations in the Americas to discuss the ongoing development of sport. Candidate Cities for the 2015 Pan American Games (Lima, Bogota and Toronto) also presented their proposals to delegates at the meeting.
