GENERATIONS FOR PEACE EMBRACES CONFLICT RESOLUTION

Renowned expert joins delegates on Day 3

Abu Dhabi, UAE: A world renowned expert in conflict resolution joined professional sports coaches on an intriguing day of peace building at the Generations For Peace Camp 09, currently ongoing in Abu Dhabi under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Professor Olivier Faure, is helping to train 60 leaders of youth from 10 countries at the 10-day camp for Generations For Peace, which is an initiative created by HRH Prince Feisal Al Hussein, of Jordan, that brings together delegates from divided communities and trains them how to use sport to unite the young.

Mr Faure is a Professor of Sociology at the Sorbonne University, Paris, where he teaches International Negotiation, and brings his expertise into a unique environment by combining it with practical sporting sessions carried out by professional coaches from basketball, football, volleyball and softball.

“To see so many people from a variety of backgrounds and countries come together in one room to discuss peace can only be a good thing,” he said. “This is the first time I have worked with Generations For Peace and I believe it can make a real difference in communities that need it most.”

On Day Three, the leaders of youth honed their skills on how to work with children having already enjoyed enlightening sessions on ‘using sport as a vehicle for change’, ‘understanding conflicts’ as well as ‘practicing conflict resolution and peace building’. These theoretical classes were combined with practical sporting sessions carried out by the professional basketball and volleyball coaches.

Launched in 2007, Generations For Peace’s current camp, which runs until March 10, enjoyed a high-profile launch when HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan, representing HH Sheikh Hamdan, attended many of the opening day’s sessions with HRH Prince Feisal.

Abu Dhabi marks the first time that the initiative has held a camp outside of Jordan where camps were held for more than 150 delegates in 2007 and 2008. Already, programmes from those camps are being cascaded in countries across Asia and Africa. Abu Dhabi also marked the introduction of Samsung Electronics as a regional sponsor.

In addition to Nigeria, Iraq, Palestine and Lebanon who have taken part before in Generations For Peace camps, new delegates are participating in Abu Dhabi from India, Yemen, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Somalia as well as the host country, UAE. The camps also teach participants how to train other trainers, who can then plan and implement sporting programmes with children through a series of workshops, interactive seminars, presentations, debates, role-play and sporting sessions. Peace Pioneers are expected to train at least 20 trainers every year; work with at least 100-200 children annually; be an advocate for peace and to promote Generations For Peace; and to support other Peace Pioneers.

As well as the Laureus Sport For Good Foundation, numerous International Federations also support the camp by providing coaches. At the Abu Dhabi camp, these include the International Softball Federation (ISF) and a professional coach from British football club Brighton & Hove Albion. In previous camps, the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) and the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), as well as national Olympic and Paralymic committees have supported the programme.
