Utah, Virginia Athletes Set For 2009 State Games of America
The first athletes from Utah and Virginia have registered to compete in the 2009 State Games of America, July 30-August 2 in Colorado Springs
First Utah & Virginia Athletes Sign Up For 2009 State Games of America In Colorado Springs
Utah Summer Games triathlon gold medalist Summer Schenck (Salt Lake City), and Virginia Coventry Commonwealth Games bowling silver medalist Trevor Morgan (Mechanicsville) are the first athletes from their states to register to compete in the 2009 State Games of America in Colorado Springs, July 30-August 2.
Schenk (31), earned the gold medal in the 2008 Utah Summer Games sprint triathlon event last summer with a time of 1:29.51.8, and she is a full ironman competitor. The 12-year-old Morgan took the silver medal in the Boys 12-Under Handicap event on the lanes. He has a high game of 235 in his career to date.
They are the latest in a field of registrations from athletes of all ages and skill levels from 25 states who have already signed up for the competition in 31 sports at 22 venues across Colorado Springs this summer to be part of the nation’s largest multi-sport event for these competitors.

Some 10,000 athletes from 47 states are expected for the event, the third time that Colorado Springs has hosted the signature event of the National Congress of State Games. A record 10,803 athletes came to the city in 2007, breaking the old mark of 9,482 for the 2005 Games in Colorado Springs. The 2011 event is ticketed for San Diego, California.
Medal winners from almost 40 individual state games and all residents of Colorado are eligible to compete in the event this year, which is hosted and conducted by the Colorado Springs Sports Corporation. www.thesportscorp.org

Allan Kroyer (18) Le Sueur, Minnesota. Star of the North Games gold medalist and silver medalist in the 800 meters at the 2008 Minnesota State Prep Championships for the third place team from Le Sueur-Henderson High School, where he was the team captain. He’s entered the 5K Run/Walk this summer in Colorado Springs.
Andrea Fairchild (35) Vicksburg, Mississippi. Will enter four swimming events after an amazing State Games of America record in track and field. She won gold medals in the high jump, shotput, discus and javelin in the 2003, 2005 and 2007 State Games of America and was the State Games of Mississippi champion in those events from 2002-2007. She was honored as the 2007 State Games of Mississippi Sportsman of the Year and she also won medals in the Hoosier State Games in volleyball and track while living in Indiana.
Melanie Ramsey (16) Prairie Du Sac, Wisconsin. Badger State Games multi-medal winner since 2004 and a sophomore at Sauk Prairie High who finished 23rd in the 3,200-meter run in the state championships last spring as a freshman. She’s entered in the 800, 1500 and 5000 meter races this summer in Colorado Springs.
Tim Martin (34) Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Silver medal winner in the shot put and sicus at the 2008 Iowa Games, and entered in the State Games of America long jump, shot put, discus and 1500-meter racewalk.
Matt Smith (33) Denver, Colorado. An accomplished triathlete who won the 2008 Steamboat Springs Triathlon with a course record, the silver medal in the 2008 State Games of the West in Colorado Springs, and took sixth in the Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon. He’s also qualified for the Boston Marathon
Molly Smith (29) Denver, Colorado. Matt’s wife and a standout triathlete herself who was second in the Steamboat Springs Triathlon in her division. Won her age group event in the Crescent Moon and Danskin Triathlons. Took the State Games of the West silver medal last summer on the Prospect Lake/Memorial Park course.
THE SPORTS CORP SALUTES: The Cornhusker State Games of Nebraska, celebrating its 25th Anniversary this summer and expecting some 15,000 athletes, July 17-26, with competition in more than 60 sports in and around Lincoln.
