Monte Carlo – The IAAF has today released the detailed statistics of its 2008 anti-doping programme including overall testing numbers and a list of athletes tested out-of-competition.
In announcing the 2008 statistics, IAAF President Lamine Diack said that the IAAF’s attention had already shifted to up-coming World Championships in Berlin and the extended anti-doping programme which will be run before, during and after the Championships.
“Our doping control programme for Berlin will the biggest yet put in place by the IAAF.  We will have increased intelligent testing in the out-of-competition period leading up to the Championships, better testing during the Championships itself, and will store samples after the event for future analysis”.
During the competition itself, the IAAF again plans over 1,000 blood and urine doping controls which is well in excess of the approximately 700 tests conducted on track and field competitors during the Beijing Olympic Games. The IAAF will also selectively store samples from Berlin for future analysis should new doping products or methods become detectable in the future.
Out-of-competition testing focused on athletes who may compete in Berlin has already begun during the “off-season” with hundreds of targeted tests already collected this year and late last year.  Prior to Berlin the IAAF will also begin implementing Biological Passports (both blood and urine) which will monitor the individual profiles of athletes.  This important initiative is a big step forward in ensuring the IAAF uses all resources and methods available in the fight against doping.
President Diack said, “We know that the cheats do not rest, so neither will we, and the IAAF has already been busy with our testing and planning for Berlin.  Together with our anti-doping partners from around the world, and from within Germany, we will do are very most to implement the best possible testing programme and deter those who consider cheating now or in Berlin”.
