USA Luge Crowns Youth National Champions

Youth A (to age 17) National Luge Championships in Park City, Utah

PARK CITY, Utah—- On Monday, Feb. 23, Vinny Simkin (Youngsville, N.Y.) and Summer Britcher (Glen Rock, Pa.) took top honors at the Youth A (to age 17) National Luge Championships in Park City, Utah.

Simkin took fourth place in the first seeding race on Feb. 22 and won gold in the Youth A Men’s Nationial Championships on Feb. 23 with a combined time of one minute, 30.925 seconds, earning the top spot in the 2008-2009 season rankings and qualifying for the Junior National “C” Team. Patrick Edmunds (Park City, Utah) won second position in the rankings and also qualified for the Junior National “C” Team. Edmunds tied with Ty Andersen (Linden, Utah) in total points for the rankings, but won the tie breaker. The tie breaker is decided by the fastest single run out of the four runs taken in the competition.

Britcher took first place in both the first seeding race on Feb. 22 and the Youth A Women’s National Championships on Feb. 23, winning the championship race and holding off a pool of 6 sliders with a time of one minute, 25.625 seconds. This has placed her first in the 2008-2009 season rankings and qualified her for the Junior National “C” Team.

In the Youth B (to age 15) Men’s National Championships, Jared Orenstein (Austin, Texas) won the first seeding race and took gold in the Youth B Men’s National Championships with a time of one minute, 28.420 seconds. Because of his age, Jared cannot qualify for points in the standings, so Riley Stohr (Whitehall, Mich.) took first place in the standings, qualifying him for the Junior National “D” Team.

Breanna Rosencrance (Yakima, Wash.) raced to gold in the Youth B Women’s National Championships with a time of one minute, 30.467 seconds. With a second place finish in the seeding race, Breanna finished with 180 points in the overall standings. Nikol Yonemura (Salt Lake City, Utah) raced to first place in the first seeding race with a time of one minute, 30.210 seconds and took silver in the National Championships, also giving her 180 points in the standings. Because Yonemura had the fastest single run of the competition, she won the tie breaker and took first place in the standings, qualifying her for the Junior National “D” Team.

West World Media provided live results for the event on the USA Luge website, and will also do so for the Norton Junior National Championships Feb. 28 and Mar. 1 and the Norton Senior National Championships Mar. 13-14.
