FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Results of day one of the ICC Chief Executives’ Committee meeting in Johannesburg
The ICC Chief Executives’ Committee (CEC) convened in Johannesburg on Tuesday for one of its four meetings per year.
The gathering, held at the Sandton Sun Hotel, discussed a range of matters relating to the playing of cricket as well as recommendations on the business of cricket for consideration by the ICC Board.
Among the items discussed were the following:
Future Tours Programme (FTP) post-2012
The meeting discussed options for the international schedule when the current FTP concludes in May 2012.
This continues to be a work-in-progress and Members will, among themselves, consider a way forward and bring a proposal to ICC General Manager – Cricket David Richardson before the matter is brought back to the CEC for further discussion.
Promoting Test cricket
The members of the CEC heard about the measures put in place to promote Test cricket ahead of the upcoming series between South Africa and Australia, a series that will determine the top side in the Reliance Mobile ICC Test Championship table.
The working group made up of ICC Full Member representatives formed after the previous CEC meeting is now up and running with a teleconference every month to discuss ways to promote the longest form of the game and that will continue.
ICC Anti-Doping Code (2009)
The meeting heard that the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has confirmed the ICC Anti-Doping Code (2009) is WADA-compliant.
It also heard that the process of Members receiving education on the new code is ongoing. Players and officials from Sri Lanka and Pakistan have already received presentations on the subject from ICC staff and more briefings will follow over the coming weeks.
Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU)
The CEC received a briefing from ACSU General Manager and Chief Investigator Ravi Sawani.
It was pointed out that although the ACSU was regarded as a world leader in the fight against corruption in sport, there was a need to avoid complacency to ensure against a return to the problems that affected cricket so badly in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Some items were carried over to Wednesday morning, 25 February. These include:
West Indies v England, second Test in Antigua
The CEC will discuss what can be done to ensure there is no repeat of the events surrounding the above match, which was abandoned after 10 balls because of an unfit outfield.
Strategy session
This group discussion will follow on from a strategy workshop that was held at its previous meeting last December in Cape Town.
The previous session in December was the start of a process to establish a number of key aims, objectives and challenges that will then feed into other decision-making forums including the ICC Board.
This process is designed to help all the Members, as well as the ICC itself, to shape their long-term thinking and plans for international cricket in a cohesive and mutually beneficial way.
It is envisaged that the CEC and the ICC Board will hold a joint session in June, during the ICC’s annual conference week, to further this process.
A media release will be sent out following the conclusion of Wednesday’s business.
The CEC comprises the chief executives of the 10 Test-playing Members and three representatives from ICC Associate Members. It is chaired by the ICC Chief Executive. The ICC President and the Chairman of the ICC Cricket Committee will also be in attendance.
