ICC President and Chief Executive meet Cricket South Africa’s board

Second catch-up with a Member board for David Morgan and Haroon Lorgat following meeting with Cricket Australia earlier this month

David Morgan: “It was a useful meeting… I was impressed with the way the CSA board is set up”

CSA President Dr Mtutuzeli Nyoka: “The meeting showed ICC is part and parcel of, rather than separate to, every Member”

ICC President David Morgan and Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat on Friday met the board of Cricket South Africa (CSA) as part of their ongoing process of information sharing with Members.

The two-hour meeting in Johannesburg, slotted in ahead of next week’s ICC Chief Executives’ Committee meeting in the same city, was the second of its kind for the pair having caught up with the board of Cricket Australia in Melbourne earlier this month.

Explaining the purpose of the exercise, Mr Morgan said: “It was a chance for us to put faces to names, explain the ICC’s set-up and outline what we do and how we do it for all 104 of our Members.

“It was a very useful meeting as CSA’s board members were able to question us as well as listen to our concerns and to our views of the opportunities and risks that the ICC faces.

“At the same time, we were happy to hear of their challenges, concerns and opportunities.

“We discussed CSA’s corporate governance structure and I was impressed with the way the board was set up including, as it does, independent directors.  And it was particularly interesting to hear of its recently acquired status as a Section 21 company in South Africa.

“CSA has worked closely with the South African Revenue Service and is now constituted in such a way that it will secure significant tax benefits that can be ploughed back into developing the sport.

“On that basis, the game in South Africa appears well placed to build upon the current success of its senior men’s team, now top of the Reliance Mobile ICC ODI Championship table and bidding for a similar placing in the Test ladder following its forthcoming series with Australia.

“It’s our intention to visit as many Full Member boards and some Associates during this calendar year, the ICC’s centenary, and hopefully it will provide all those involved with a better understanding of each other’s issues and also, moving forward, a shared, common vision,” added Mr Morgan.

CSA President Dr Mtutuzeli Nyoka said: “The work David and Haroon are doing in going around the world to take the message of the ICC to the Members is very important.

“I’m certain a lot of players and officials have little understanding of how the ICC works, what its challenges are and also its achievements.

“What this meeting did was show the ICC is part and parcel of, rather than separate to, every Member.

“The CSA board was given a clear picture of the contribution the ICC makes at every level of the game and it was an excellent exercise from our perspective.”

Details of future visits to Member boards by ICC officials will be confirmed, announced and detailed in due course.
