Africa International Sport Convention CISA

Alexandria hosted, for three days, the third edition of the Africa International Sport Convention CISA, a CISA that has welcomed from 12th to 14th February 2009 over 300 delegates from 35 countries worldwide. These three days of debate have granted participants the opportunity to discuss 6 themes of major importance for the promotion and the development of sport in Africa

.

Theme 1: Youth Development through Sport: A challenge for Africa

The first topic of the forum related to the challenge that Africa has to deal with to succeed to making sport a development factor for youth. The relevance of this topic has been noted by the many participants of the event on the eve of the first edition of the Youth Olympic Games. Discussions were led by former athlete Frankie Fredericks of Namibia, with the participation of Rania El Wani, IOC member in Egypt

and former swimmer.

Theme 2 : Doping: Is Africa really involved in the fight against doping?.

The other major challenge the African continent is its commitment to the fight against
doping. As a modern times phenomenon, deriving from ancient times, doping cannot be ignored; main reason why this recurring topic in the panel of different editions of CISA’s forum. Participants discussed the different forms of doping, the fighting methods with an emphasis on their expensive costs and the low-cost of resources available for Africa, all that under the vigilant eye of Rodney Swigelaar the Director of WADA Africa and Paul Marriott Lloyd of UNESCO.

Theme 3 : Sport Governance and Management in Africa

.

We must recognize that no sport initiative can succeed without good administration, good management and that was the main reason why the theme on good governance was one of the most attractive topics. It has enabled many panelists under the leadership of Sheikh Thiaré, President of Zone 2 of ANOCA to engage in fruitful discussions of this issue which somehow represents a sizeable thorn on the side of African sport. With a panel composed of representatives of the African Union, the Supreme Council for Sport in Africa

and representatives of National Olympic Committees, debates were rich and stormy. It is obvious that recommendations made by participants on the subject will no doubt provide a clear message to the IOC towards its Olympic Congress in October 2010.

Theme 4 : Successful Sport Performance strategies: The cases of Ethiopia, Kenya and Jamaica

After the last Olympics and the upcoming 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, the organizers of CISA, thought it was time to open the debate on sports performance, taking as examples countries that have developed good strategies. Thus, comparative studies were made on the cases of Egypt, South Africa, Kenya and Jamaica. The latter, although a third-world country, has developed good strategies that have produced good results in various international competitions including the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. This theme was attended by noticed Neville McCook, Secretary General of the Jamaica Olympic Committee and IAAF board member. His detailed presentation has enabled participants to better understand the factors behind the success of Jamaica

.

Theme 5 :
Using sport for Education, Peace and Development in Africa

.

As a social phenomenon, sport can not remain silent to all the conflicts around. It therefore plays the role of a factor of peace and development in Africa, but also a wonderful tool for promoting education. Participants of this panel have exchanged their mutual experiences and especially those relating to the organization of Peace & Sport headed by Joel Bouzou or Prince Faical of Jordan

’s Generation for Peace.

Themes 6 : Major sporting events in Africa

Just the quality of the panel members of this theme shows the keenness of interest of organizers for this specific topic. Lassana Palenfo president of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), Machachi Shepande Head of planning and development of the Supreme Council for Sport in Africa (SCSA) and Khaled Hammouda, Dean of the Faculty of sports for men of Alexandria University, developed the theme on Major sporting events in Africa under moderator and IOC member Sam Ramsamy,. Thus, the All African Games, the ANOCA games, the upcoming World Cup in South Africa

, all these issues were analyzed by panel members.

As a reminder the third edition of CISA was officially opened by the Chairman of National Sports Council (Minister of Sports)of Egypt

, Hassan Sakr, in the presence of Mounir Sabet, president of the NOC and other personalities
