Doping Control Officers for Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games -
50 Volunteers Training for Games Time Role
Singapore, 14 February 2009 – Fifty volunteers with the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games are training to be Doping Control Officers (DCO) during Games
time.
The “Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Anti-Doping Seminar 2009” will run from 14 to 18 February. Organised by the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC), the
Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC) and the Singapore Sports Council (SSC), the seminar is supported by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the Japan Anti-Doping Agency (JADA).
WADA is the international independent organisation created to develop and implement the World Anti-Doping Code, harmonising anti-doping in all sports and all areas of the world. JADA is Japan’s anti-doping agency responsible for all anti-doping activities in the country.
Five JADA officers will be conducting the training for the Singapore 2010 volunteers. The volunteers, between 23 and 62 years old, will attend both theory and practical lessons in doping control.
The YOG Anti-Doping Seminar was declared open by the Senior Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Home Affairs, Mr Masagos Zulkifli Bin Masagos Mohamad at SYOGOC HQ this morning.
He said, “Anti-doping efforts are integral to promoting fair play and the ideals of the Olympic Movement. Such efforts are relevant to our young people as we educate, engage and influence them to adopt and live by the Olympic Values of
Excellence, Friendship and Respect. Inculcating the right values and attitudes about sports and fair play in our youths, whether they play a sport or not, may well be the key to a future where doping is no longer a problem in sports. To this
end, I urge our schools to explore issues and values relating to anti-doping as part of the Olympic Education Programme.”
“Doping Control Officers play an important role in today’s sport competitions. In addition to volunteering at Singapore 2010, these DCOs-in-training will be able to play a part in future sports competitions that are held in Singapore, and even in the region. This will be a good legacy beyond the YOG. We thank JADA for training our volunteers and WADA for sharing with the sports fraternity tools on
implementing anti-doping educational programmes among athletes.” said Mr Goh Kee Nguan, Chief Executive Officer, SYOGOC.
Dr Patrick Goh, Chairman of SNOC Anti-Doping in Sports Commission said, “I am happy that with a significant event such as Singapore 2010, we are able to generate momentum to align the efforts of various local sport associations that are active in anti-doping. This series of events offers a one-stop gathering point for the various country representatives.”
In addition to the Doping Control Officers Course, the following programmes and meeting are being held:
• The National Sports Association (NSA) Anti-Doping Seminar (14 February 2009) for NSAs and SSC personnel.
• The Southeast Asia Regional Anti-Doping Organisation (SEA RADO) Education Session (17 to 18 February 2009) for representatives from the Southeast Asia Anti-Doping Organisations.
• SEA RADO Annual Board Meeting (16 February 2009).
In total, 200 WADA, JADA and local officials, trainers and country representatives from Southeast Asian countries will be taking part in this five-day event.
