Madrid Olympic & Paralympic Bid: ‘Safest choice for 2016’ presents its Candidature File to the IOC in Lausanne
Madrid delivers Bid to the IOC
Madrid, 11 February 2009 – The Madrid 2016 Olympics candidate team has today reached the most important milestone so far in its bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2016 with the delivery of its Candidature File to the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Lausanne, Switzerland.
The team, who hand-delivered the Candidature File to Lausanne, included the managing director of the bid, Antonio Fernández Arimany and Raúl Chapado, the director of Sports and Projects, who have jointly managed the document’s formulation. They were accompanied to Switzerland by Madrid 16 Envoys: Spanish Olympic medallist Joan Lino Martínez (long-jump) and Paralympic medallist Teresa Perales (swimming) as well as two citizens of Madrid who are featured in chapter headings, representing the face of the bid and Madrid 2016’s unique Generation 16 programme.
The Candidature File, written in three languages (English, French and Spanish), explains in meticulous detail the scope of the Madrid bid covering 600 pages, three volumes, 17 topics, 500 guarantees and 80 images. Since May last year over 150 people, each an expert in their own area, have been working together to produce a document which truly reflects the strengths of hosting the 2016 Games in Madrid.
The Madrid bid has full support in Spain, with 92% of the public in favour, complete financial backing from corporate sponsors and government, and the royal family also committed to hosting the Games and promoting sport throughout Spain.
Madrid has been dubbed the ‘safest choice’ for the IOC at this time with all infrastructure complete, 77% of the sports’ venues either complete or under construction, and finances guaranteed. The Spanish capital is an all-embracing, multi-cultural city with many years’ experience hosting international events and is passionate about hosting these Games and providing a sporting legacy for generations to come.
The book included major contributions from the Madrid City Hall, three Commissions of the Community of Madrid, seven Departments of Central Government, local governments of the partner cities as well as institutions like AENA, Renfe, Port of Valencia, National Federation of Mint and Stamp, Madrid Hotel Association (Hotelkeepers\’ Association of Olympian Madrid and of Guadalajara, Committees and Paralímpico Español, ONCE and CERMI).
There has also been collaboration and external advice from high profile organizations in Spain, many of which pledged financial support for the Madrid bid at the beginning of last year. These include: Accenture (finance, marketing and technology), Everis (accommodation), SDG and Epypsa (transport), Bovis (technical projects, planes), Tau y Tres Tipos Gráficos (design), Garrigues (legal matters) and Evaluación Ambiental y Soluciones para el Medio Ambiente (environmental evaluation and solutions).
“With the Candidature File being submitted to the IOC in Lausanne today, the race for 2016 has truly begun,” said Madrid 2016 CEO Mercedes Coghen.
