RIO 2016 PRESENTS CANDIDATURE FILE

Brazil’s President is enthusiastic about Rio de Janeiro’s detailed Olympic plans and reaffirms his full support for the bid

Rio, 5 February 2009 – The Rio 2016 Bid Committee presented details of the bid’s Candidate File to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at a high-level meeting in Rio. Set for submission to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) next week in Lausanne, the File sets out in detail the city’s vision and detailed proposal to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Visibly enthusiastic during the presentation, President Lula reiterated his full commitment to hosting the Games in Rio and said “I will do whatever is needed,” regarding the Committee’s ongoing campaign to bring the Games to Brazil and South America for the first time.

The presentation, which took place at the Palácio da Cidade in Rio, was attended by the Minister of Sport, Orlando Silva and the Minister of Cities, Márcio Fortes. The Governor of Rio, Sérgio Cabral and the city’s Mayor, Eduardo Paes were also onsite for this momentous presentation.

“We gave President Lula a full briefing on the final plans for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” explained Carlos Arthur Nuzman, President of the Brazilian Olympic Committee and President of the Rio 2016 Bid Committee.

“These would be Games of celebration and transformation. President Lula was very enthusiastic and offered his full support to help achieve our vision for Brazil and all of South America. All spheres of government are united in their support of Rio’s bid to host the Games and this cohesion is a significant strength for our bid.”

The IOC requires that all Candidate Cities submit 100 copies of the Candidature File, which is then used as the basis for a technical analysis of each of the proposals. The three-volume document consists of 600 pages covering 17 themes, such as transport, accommodation and the environment. The material includes text, tables, technical manuals, maps, and architectural plans of the planned venues.
