FINAL SUPER BOWL XLIII RATINGS ARE IN;
GAME BOASTS LARGEST TOTAL AUDIENCE IN TV HISTORY
Tempe, AZ – Super Bowl XLIII featuring the Cardinals and Steelers achieved the largest television audience in U.S. history with a total audience of 151.6 million viewers, according to official national ratings data released by Nielsen Media Research.
It surpassed last year’s audience of 148.3 million for Patriots-Giants, meaning that the two largest audiences in TV history were for Super Bowl XLIII in which the Cardinals participated and Super Bowl XLII that the Cardinals hosted at University of Phoenix Stadium.

The game had average audience of 98.7 million people - the second-highest average in TV history behind the M*A*S*H finale in 1983 (106 million). Average viewership represents the average number of people watching at any one point in the game while total audience represents anyone who tuned in for at least six minutes of the game.
Locally, the game was the most-watched television program in Phoenix history. It generated a 47.5 rating and an 80 share while reaching 882,000 homes.
The 80 share locally was the highest of any market in the country, edging the 79 share the game earned in Pittsburgh.
