Mayor Daley to Visit united Arab Emirates as part of “City to City” Exchange

Seeks to Strengthen Connections and Further Raise Chicago’s International Profile

Mayor Richard M. Daley announced today that he will travel to Dubai and Abu Dabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), next week as part of a “city to city” exchange in partnership with the Chicago Chamber of Commerce and World Business Chicago, the city’s not-for-profit economic development corporation. The Mayor will be joined by a delegation made up of local business leaders representing a cross-section of both Chicago’s public and private sectors.

“The global economy is here to stay. We no longer compete just with other cities in our own countries, we compete with cities all over the world for jobs, for business, for tourism,” said Mayor Daley. “In these hard economic times, we need to be doing everything we can to make sure our city is competitive globally and we have a lot to gain by strengthening our ties with the United Arab Emirates.”

During a series of meetings and roundtable discussions with government officials and business leaders, the Mayor will reinforce existing relationships as well as make a case for Chicago as a global city, an investment location and a strong business service provider. He will also attend a joint meeting with the Chicago Council on Global Affairs in Dubai.

In exchange, the Mayor will share many of Chicago’s best practices including sustainability and education initiatives, youth work programs and professional service practices. He is also interested in seeking to expand the Chicago Public Schools’ Arab Language Program.

Chicago has more than two dozen companies doing business in the UAE. In addition, many of Chicago’s world-renowned architecture firms are working on noteworthy development projects in both Dubai and Abu Dabi.

The trip is being sponsored by World Business Chicago.
