Bhartu Batters Bond As Seeds Suffer In Swansea

Canadian qualifier Hirendra Bhartu produced the biggest shock on the opening day of the Gravells Welsh International Open as three seeds made unexpected exits from the final World Bowls Tour ranking event of the season being staged for the first time at the new City and County of Swansea Indoor Bowls Club in Swansea.

Bhartu, a 50-year-old from British Columbia who has made steady progress up the WBT world rankings over the past four years, despatched England\‘s Ian Bond, the No9 seed and a former world championship runner-up, 7-6, 4-9, 2-0.

The Canadian led throughout the first set, then took the first end of the second.  But Bond, the \‘Devon Destroyer\’ from Crediton, scored a double in the next end and extended his advantage to win the set and force a best-of-three-ends tie-break.

But Bhartu held his nerve to win the first two ends to secure a place in the second round of the event for the first time for two years.

English newcomer Lewis Moore showed no signs of nerves in his maiden performance on the WBT\‘s portable rink.  The 22-year-old qualifier from Great Yarmouth overwhelmed Jonathan Ross, the 14th seed, 11-0 in the first set.  But the experienced Irishman came back to win the second by a two-shot margin to take the game into a tie-break

The ailing Ross was unable to maintain his momentum, however, as Moore clinched an 11-0, 6-8, 2-0 win to secure a place in the last sixteen.

Englishman Les Gillett was unable to reproduce the form which saw him reach the world championship quarter-finals earlier this month in Norfolk.  The 13th seed from Loughborough took the opening set against fellow countryman Robert Chisholm - but the 23-year-old qualifier from Newcastle-upon-Tyne fought back to draw level.

But after honours were shared following the first two ends of the tie-break, it was Welsh Open newcomer Chisholm that ultimately prevailed, winning 3-11, 8-5, 2-1 to claim his first second round place in a WBT event since making his only other appearance on the Tour at the International Open in Sheffield in 2006.

England\‘s Mark Royal successfully began the defence of the title he won for the first time last year with a solid 12-6, 13-1 win over Hong Kong qualifier Herbert Kwok.

By contrast, the new world champion Billy Jackson was taken the full distance before edging to a 9-6, 4-10, 2-0 win over New Zealand qualifier Phillip Bennett.

Fourth seed David Gourlay, the Australia-based Scot who won the Welsh title in 2001, also began his 2009 campaign in fine style, beating US qualifier Barry Pickup 14-4, 13-2.

In the final match of the first day, England\‘s 15th seed Simon Skelton beat Welsh qualifier Paul Taylor 9-3, 9-7 to ensure his place in the world top 16 for next season.
