Vintage Autos Will Be Back On The Hill In 2009!
Colorado Springs, January 12——America’s long love affair with its automobiles continues this summer in Colorado Springs in a big way.
That’s because Vintage Cars will be back again for the 87th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb on July 19.
Vintage entries will be coordinated by Rocky Mountain Vintage Racing, a non-profit club of more than 500 members who are vintage racing enthusiasts. The club’s primary focus is the organization, production, and sanctioning of vintage car races in the Rocky Mountain region.
It has over 500 eligible cars that are three decades old or more, including Austin Healey, Corvette, Lotus, MG, Mini, Porsche, Triumph, Formula Ford and Formula Vee. In addition, some more exotic and perhaps lesser known names such as McLaren, Lola, Abarth, Morgan, Siata and Zink participate in their events. Engines range from less than 1000cc to more than 6 liters of “ground-pounding” force.
National Driver & Competitor registration is now open for the 87th running of the fabled Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
Drivers may now go to www.ppihc.com to sign up for the 2009 edition of the legendary race.
The “Race To The Clouds” is America’s second-oldest motor sports race behind the Indianapolis 600, and has been staged since 1916. The race is run on a 12.42 mile course that begins at 9,390 feet and finishes at the 14,110 foot summit of America’s Mountain; Pikes Peak summit.
This year’s race has 11 classes and features a variety of automotive, semi truck, exhibition, open wheel, super stock car, pro truck and motorcycle classes with a field approaching 200 competitors.
The popularFan Fest on Friday night, July 17, is expected to draw over 35,000 race fans and sports enthusiasts to Downtown Colorado Springs.
The event is part of a 2009 “Summer of Sports Sizzle” in Colorado Springs, which will also host the State Games of America (July 30-August 2), with some 10,000 amateur athletes from 47 states coming to the city.
