Bowls Bonanza Boasts 11th Year At Potters

The 2009 Potters Holidays World Indoor Bowls Championships, the unique three-week festival of world-class bowls which will decide four world titles, gets underway tomorrow (Monday) at Potters Leisure Resort in Norfolk for the 11th successive year when qualifiers from Canada and the USA compete in the first play-off round of the World Indoor Pairs Championship.

Led by the flagship World Singles Championship, the World Bowls Tour programme also includes the Ladies World Matchplay Championship and the Mixed Pairs World Matchplay Championship.  With live coverage on BBC TV and staged on the WBT\‘s unique and world-renowned portable rink, the championships will feature the top 20 bowlers in the world, joined by qualifiers from the UK, Australia, South Africa, USA, Canada, Hong Kong, Israel and New Zealand.

Play begins at 10.00am when Canadians Fred Fong & Christie Grahams take on fellow qualifiers Ed Quo & Charlie Herbert, from the USA, in the first Pairs play-off - the winners of which will meet Irish qualifiers and former champions Ian McClure & Jeremy Henry on Tuesday for a place in the first round.

Home interest will open up in the afternoon session when English qualifiers Neil Chandler & David Howes, from Gloucestershire, face experienced Welsh duo Jason Greenslade & Robert Weale, the fifth seeds, in a first round clash.

England\‘s top seeds Ian Bond & Andy Thomson will begin the defence of the title they won for the first time last year in a Tuesday afternoon meeting with New Zealand qualifiers Paul Girdler & Ken Walker.

The inevitable packed crowd in the International Arena at Potters Leisure Resort in Hopton on Sea will be treated to an all-East Anglia pairing on Tuesday when Greg Harlow, the world No2 from Cambridgeshire, teams up for the first time with Mark Royal, the world No6 from Suffolk.  The new duo take on Welsh qualifiers Mark Harding & Phil Rowlands.

Singles action also gets underway on Tuesday when Devon\‘s Robert Paxton faces fellow qualifier Chris Gale, from Blackpool, in an all-English fixture at 9.30am.  Exeter postman Paxton, the world No21 who is the highest-ranked qualifier in the draw, reached the quarter-finals in last month\‘s International Open in Burgess Hill, while Gale is making his first appearance at Potters since reaching the second round four years ago.
