2009 Colorado Springs Sports Wish-List

Sports wishes for 2009 from the Colorado Springs Sports Corporation for the "Amateur Sports Capital of the USA"

New Year’s 2009 Wishes From The Sports Corp

As the New Year approaches, The Sports Corp sends wishes for success, reward, and enjoyment to the Colorado Springs sports family, and the thousands of athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers, parents and fans who will make this a special place for sports again in 2009!

q       For Ice Hockey head coaches Scott Owens (CC) and Frank Serratore (AFA), electric second half finishes, regular-season and league post-season titles, and berths once again in the 2009 NCAA Tourney (and sellout crowds!)

q       For Air Force men’s basketball coach Jeff Reynolds, at least 18 wins, a high MWC finish, and an all-MWC selection for senior Andrew Henke

q       For AFA head football coach Troy Calhoun, a brief vacation after a New year’s Eve bowl win over the Houston Cougars in Fort Worth tomorrow, a great recruiting season, and  injury-free and productive spring drills on the way to a great 2009 season with 10 wins!

q       For USOC Chief Executive office Jim Scherr and his team, lots of new sponsors, tons of donations, the kickoff of the new USOC television network, a great run-up year to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, a huge community-wide celebration to accompany the opening of the new Olympic House downtown, and the October 2 selection of Chicago as the host city for the 2016 Olympic Games!

q       For U.S. Paralympics, continued recognition and support for its programs, its elite athletes with disabilities who inspire our nation, and success on the road to Vancouver and London!

q       For our town’s high school athletes, enjoyment, success, reward, maybe a college scholarship, great memories, and well-deserved recognition from the media and many berths on All-League, All-State and All-Colorado teams!

q       For our state’s citizens and athletes of all ages and skills in every hamlet, town, and city, registration in record numbers for the 2009 State Games of America, July 30-August 2, in Colorado Springs, and an enjoyable and memorable trip to our town for the competition and good times with their families and friends who pack our hotels and motels, visit our attractions, and spend their hard-earned bucks in town!

q       Ditto for athletes from 46 other states, come to Colorado Springs , bring your family and friends, and enjoy yourself!

q       For UCCS Athletic Director Steve Kirkham and his staff, continued growth and success for the Mountain Lions’ NCAA Division II programs for men’s and women’s sports, and a future bright and shining with possibility and reward!

q       For Air Force Academy Director of Athletics Dr. Hans Mueh, the full realization of his dream for a new foundation to open up new revenue streams and growth for his superb programs, facilities and the future!

q       For Colorado College Athletic  Director Ken Ralph, continued success in his programs for men and women, more community recognition and support, and maybe a night football game at Washburn Field under the lights with a crowd of over 3,000 to see the Tigers!

q       For Dr. Mueh and Ken Ralph, a quiet, informal session over coffee some morning to discuss the possibility of staging the state’s first-ever outdoor ice hockey game at Falcon Stadium between the two schools. Too big to think about? Not!

q    For Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Chairman Bob Gillis and his team, strong corporate support, perfect weather, big-time media coverage, a huge crowd, and records galore during the 87th “Race To The Clouds”!

q       For Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Commissioner JR Smith and his team, a case of champagne to celebrate the venerable league’s 100th Anniversary on March 6, and continued growth, success, recognition as one of the premier DII conferences in the nation, national titles, playoff berths and national rankings for RMAC men’s and women’s teams and individuals!

q       For Mountain West Conference Commissioner Craig Thompson and his staff, a January 2 win by Utah over the Crimson Tide in the Sugar Bowl, another great basketball season, NCAA Tourney berths, television exposure, a great 2009 football season even better than the ’08 version with another BCS Bowl slot, and maybe the 2009 MWC Football Media preview event right here in Colorado Springs next summer!

q       For all the Colorado Springs-based USOC National Governing Bodies of sports, growth, increased funding and resources, media recognition, healthy and drug-free athletes, international success and influence, and optimism on the road to the Olympics, Paralympics, Pan American Games and global showdowns!

q   For our own 2008 Olympic wrestling gold medalist Henry Cejudo, more of the same!

q       For Sky Sox President & GM Tony Ensor and his tireless staff, another record attendance year at Security Service Field, a roster of top Rockies’ prospects and an iconic major league veteran or two, more great family promotion dates, the first PCL title since 1995, and a win in the Oklahoma City Triple-A Championship Game at Bricktown Ballpark!

q       For Pacific Coast League President Branch Rickey, a record attendance year, success for the new Reno franchise, news that the Omaha Royals will play in the city’s new downtown stadium starting in 2010 and preserve the traditions of the franchise, and less travel so he can actually enjoy a summer in Colorado Springs even more!

q       For USA Boxing CEO Jim Millman, the realization that there’s no better place for his athletes and his major events than right here in Colorado Springs! Kick the tires up in Denver, Jim, but bring back the National Championships to the Springs

q       For the Sports Information staffs at Air Force, Colorado College and UCCS, some occasional sleep and a vacation, a pay raise, major media coverage, and recognition for the passion, service and effort they produce every day of every week and every month on behalf of their institutions and their student athletes!

q       For USOC Director of Media Services Bob Condron, celebrating a quarter century with the organization in 2009, peace, happiness, success and reward for his dedication, passion and commitment to the athletes and the media in the country and around the world. There has been no more loyal employee, no better friend to the news media, than this energetic veteran of Olympic sport and all-around good guy! He is now the USOC’s longest-serving senior executive in history, passing the guy who hired him in 1984, Mike Moran.

q       For the 70th edition of the famed Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo, sellout crowds and support, and fun and excitement for the fans and competitors every day!

q       For Mark Lucas and his passionate, caring staff at the U.S. Association of Blind Athletes, success in the IBSA World Youth and Student Championships and Pan American Games here in town in July!

q       For the yet-to-be-selected 10th Anniversary Class of 2009 of the Colorado Springs Sports Hall of Fame, tremendous satisfaction, enjoyment and pride during the induction ceremonies and dinner at the Colorado Springs World Arena in the autumn, and a record crowd to enjoy it with you!

q       For World Arena czaress Dot Lischick and her staff of solid professionals, a banner year for shows, sports events and conferences, sellout crowds, and a new, permanent plan, forged with CC, to deliver college ice hockey scores throughout Tiger home games on the big board and during brief dead time by the public address announcer. It’s the only missing part of the big-time hockey atmosphere at these games!

q       For the talented, indefatigable and often undermanned Colorado Springs print and broadcast news media, so many great local stories, so many great local athletes, coaches and leaders and their achievements, and so many compelling local sports moments that they relegate coverage of the Denver professional sports teams to pages 2-3 and the second half of their nightly sports segments!
