Governor Sergio Cabral promotes Rio’s bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games in meeting with French president Nicolas Sarkozy

Sarkozy, accompanied on his visit to Rio de Janeiro by his wife, Carla Bruni, enjoyed a typical carioca evening.

At a meeting held yesterday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s president Luis Inácio Lula da Silva, the president of France, Nicolas Sarkozy, the president of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Durão Barroso, and governor of Rio, Sérgio Cabral, discussed Rio de Janeiro’s bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games. During the meeting, Cabral declared that “it is South America’s turn to host the Games,” in a reference to the fact that the continent has never before staged the world’s greatest sports event.

For Cabral, the work of Brazilian diplomats and the state government of Rio de Janeiro in promoting the bid never stops, and the meeting with Sarkozy was an important opportunity to raise the issue.

Sarkozy, accompanied on his visit to Rio de Janeiro by his wife, Carla Bruni, enjoyed a typical carioca evening. At Flamengo Park, which will host various open-air sports events if Rio is chosen to host the 2016 Olympics Games, the couple visited the Museum of Modern Art, and later attended a show featuring Gilberto Gil and Charles Aznavour.
