Chilean President and FIFA President to kick off the World Cup in Chile

The President of the Republic of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, and the FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter will take part in the opening ceremony of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Chile 2008, to take place on Wednesday, 19 November 2008 at the Francisco Sánchez Rumoroso stadium in Coquimbo just before the opening match between Chile and England (21.00 Chilean local time, 17.00 CET).

The tournament, which will be played in Coquimbo, Chillán, La Florida (Santiago) and Temuco, will be contested by the 16 best women’s under-20 sides in the world. This is the second edition of the competition, the first having been held in Russia in 2006, when Korea DPR clinched the title. Prior to that, two FIFA U-19 Women’s World Championships were held in Canada (2002) and Thailand (2004). This is the first FIFA women’s tournament to be held in South America.
