INTERNATIONAL ARCHERY FEDERATION APPROVES 2016 RIO BID FACILITIES
Federation’s secretary general visits the Sambadrome, where archery competitions will be held
Archery competitions of the proposed Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games will be held at the Sambadrome, one of the city’s greatest and most famous facilities, which hosts one of Brazil’s biggest cultural festivals. And the idea pleased the International Archery Federation, which on Thursday officially approved the proposed competition location.
The International Olympic Committee requires that all bid city competition facilities be approved by the relevant international federations. Over three days, the secretary general of FITA, Tom Dielen, visited the Sambadrome and attended technical meetings with the Rio 2016 team. He left satisfied with what he saw: “It was a profitable visit,” Dielen said. “The proposed facility is well-prepared and it fulfills all the necessities of the sport, and it’s located in a central region of the city. The idea to mix samba with sport is fantastic.”
Archery competitions will be held in a facility with a capacity for 6,000 spectators. “The concept of the Rio 2016 bid is well done and compact,” Dielen said. “Besides that, the city has experience gained from the 2007 Rio Pan American Games.”
