FC Indiana 1, New Zealand WNT 0

Lisa Grubb scored her ninth goal of the season in the 50th minute as FC Indiana defeated New Zealand WNT 1-0 in an international friendly at Kuntz Stadium in Indianapolis. The victory raised FC Indiana?s season record to 16-2.

FC Indiana had the better of the play throughout with a 16-2 advantage in shots. Kristin Luckenbill had to make two saves as she recorded her fourth solo shutout of the season.
FC Indiana dominated the first half outshooting the Kiwis by a 7-1 margin. FC Indiana started early as Maria Ruiz?s effort off a cross from Elena Terekhova was tipped over by New Zealand keeper Jenny Bindon in the fifth minute. Monica Ocampo followed with a shot just left following a nice combination with Julianne Sitch and Maria Ruiz three minutes later.

In the second half FC Indiana continued to press and create opportunities but substitute goalkeeper Rachel Howard did her best to keep her team in the game with a number of strong saves. After Ruiz rolled a great chance across the goal from a sharp angle in the 47th minute, Howard dove to deny Lauren Sesselamnn one minute later.
Grubb opened the scoring in the 50th minute off a nice feed from Ruiz, who took a pass from Sesselmann before clipping a ball behind the New Zealand defence which Lisa Grubb watched over her shoulder and then volleyed first time into the top corner of Rachel Howard?s net.
Howard kept FC Indiana off the board the rest of the opening half with nice saves on three occasions. In the 58th minute, Howard parried wide a blast from Jessy Havrilesko. She also made a nice diving stop on Sesselmann in the 66th minute and followed that with a 1v1 save on Maria Ruiz less than two minutes later.
In the 81st minute, Howard made a fantastic stop on Ruiz?s blast from 8-yards out before New Zealand captain Rebecca Smith blocked Grubb?s rebound on the goalline.
New Zealand did create their best chance in the 80th minute when Zoe Thompson close range shot beat Luckenbill but was kept out by Jessy Havrilesko.
“We played well and created quality chances but were wasteful in front of the net,” said coach Shek Borkowski. The win improved FC Indiana record in international matches to 5-0-0, including wins over Australia, Trinidad & Tobago, Mexico and New Zealand.
