(SFC) New support numbers were released today by the Calgary Bid Exploration Committee (CBEC) that show two-thirds of Canadians are supportive of idea to host the winter Games.

Almost 2,000 respondents from Calgary, Canmore, Banff and Cochrane were surveyed via telephone and online to test the barometer as to latest public opinion. Stone-Olafson, CBEC's official research partner for the feasibility study carried out the polling that took place March 6-19, 2017.

And polling showed that support is higher among telephone respondents (68%) than those online (60%) and Banff came ahead as the highest area of residents in favor at 79% in support. Calgary had 68% with Canmore at 66% and Cochrane at 67%.

The survey also showed that support tends to be higher in residents under 55 years of age and with those that have inhabited the Calgary area less than twenty years. Calgary last hosted the winter Games in 1988 the same year that Seoul, South Korea hosted the summer Games later that year.

Rick Hanson, Chair of the Calgary Bid Exploration Committee, said, "There is tremendous value in not only gathering, but truly understanding, the opinions of Calgarians and area residents.

"As a Committee, we are invested in putting Calgary's vision first. This means looking into every opportunity and concern identified by citizens during the bid exploration process."

The CBEC will present their research initiatives to the Calgary City Council on July 24, 2017 in their final recommendation to proceed with the bid.

Vancouver hosted the last Canadian Olympics in 2010 and these new polling numbers are a boost to the Calgary feasibilty study. So far Sion, Switzerland is the only other city to have the backing of their National Olympic Committee to join the 2026 race and the last time they bid was a hotly contested race against Turin, Italy for 2006 that was won by the Italians.

The IOC will begin taking applications next year for the 2026 bid campaign.
